Kunene Tour

This fourteen day motorbike safari is an extension of the Kaoko Land Motorbike Safari and will take you right up to the Kunene River.  This region is home to powerful landscapes and stands out with a majesty and uniqueness all of its own.  A challenging and adventurous route will take you to the spectacular Epupa Falls.  Hippos and crocodiles can be seen at the Kunene River and other highlights include visits to the historic German fort at Sesfontein and the Ruacana FallsPalmwag is at the centre of the area inhabited by the world-renowned desert-dwelling elephant and black rhino, and the possibility of seeing these rare animals is one of the main attractions of this motorbike safari.

Kaoko Motorbike Safari

TEN DAYS, 2 280KM


DAY 1
Arrive at the Hosea Kutako International Airport (Windhoek) where you will meet your safari leader.  Our comfortable 4x4 vehicles will transport you to a scenic lodge situated ± 11 kilometres from the airport. Safari briefing and an induction course on dirt road motorbike riding will follow upon arrival at the lodge.

You are now ready to get your first taste of African dirt roads and will have plenty of time during the rest of the day to familiarize yourself with the motorbike you will be using during the safari.

Final safari administration and planning will be concluded before dinner is served at the lodge while you enjoy the opportunity to acquaint yourself with your safari hosts and fellow participants. 

Lodge accommodation will provide the necessary comfort for a good night’s rest prior to the first day of serious riding.

DAY 2
320km
Namibia, Giraffe

Early wake up call by your safari leader and a hearty Namibian breakfast at the lodge will set you up for your first stretch of true adventurous dirt road riding. 

En route to our destination at Omaruru you will get your first opportunity to experience the splendid beauty of the Namibian landscape. 

A gravel road will take you to Okahandja where you can witness the Omatako Mountains (Herero for buttocks) north of Okahandja.  Self catering chalets at a lodge near Omaruru will provide the ideal setting to unwind from the first day of riding.

A variety of game at the lodge will introduce you to the Namibian wildlife.  Optional game drives can be arranged.  After the game drive the camp fire will be lit for a traditional Namibian braai. The day will be concluded with a night cap at the waterhole.



DAY 3
370km

After breakfast at the lodge we will visit the winery and the traditional wood carvers in Omaruru before we depart for Kamanjab.  On our way we will stop at the Otjihaenamaparero Fossil Tracks for snacks and drinks.  These footprints of land living three toed upright walking dinosaurs formed some 150 to 180 million years ago will provide a unique photo opportunity.

About 4.5 km before reaching Kamanjab we will visit the Peet Alberts Koppie which is Namibia’s second-largest rock engraving site.  Dinner and accommodation will be provided by a lodge near Kamanjab. 

 

DAY 4
340km
A wake up call at the crack of dawn and a scrumptious breakfast at the lodge will prepare you to depart for the frontier town of Opuwo.  We will be traveling north next to the western border of the Etosha National Park as we enter Owamboland.

You will know witness the traditional Owambo lifestyle in the various villages next to the road.  As we turn west we will enter the rugged Kaokoland which is regarded as one of Namibia’s most scenic regions.  Friendly traditional nomadic Himba livestock farmers will greet you with enthusiasm along the road to Opuwo.  You will be treated to traditional dance and culture of the Himba people at the nearby lodge where we will be spending the night.  Dinner will be served at the lodge.

DAY 5
273km

After breakfast at the lodge we will depart for Twyfelfontein via Fort Sesfontein

Palmwag will provide the ideal opportunity to take a break and enjoy refreshments.  Palmwag is at the centre of the area inhabited by the world-renowned desert-dwelling elephant and black rhino, and the possibility of seeing these rare animals is one of the main attractions of the area.

A campsite on the banks of the Aba-Huab river will provide accommodation for the night.  The evening will be spent around the campfire while your hosts will be treating you with their personal favorite outdoor recipes prepared on open fire while you share stories of your motorbike adventure with fellow participants.


DAY 6
excursions

After a traditional Damara breakfast prepared on open fire we will set off to explore the Twyfelfontein area with its superb scenery, which alternates from gravel plains and table-top mountains to hidden valleys.  Activities for the day will comprise mostly of visits to the Twyfelfontein rock art sites, Organ Pipes, Burnt Mountain and Petrified Forest.

Another night will be spent camping under the African skies in Damaraland.  After a sundowner guests can unwind around the campfire and look out for the desert-dwelling elephants as they are frequently seen in this area, even passing through the camp at night!  Dinner will comprise of traditional food prepared on open fire.       


DAY 7
356km

After breakfast at a nearby lodge we will depart for Swakopmund via the Namib desert. On our way to Swakopmund you will pass the Brandberg on your right hand side which is the highest peak in Namibia.  As we follow the coast line to Swakopmund we will stop to visit the seal colony.  From here we will proceed south along the cold Benguella stream towards Swakopmund.

Comfortable accommodation will be provided in Swakopmund. 

Tonight you will be treated to traditional German cuisine in one of the finest restaurants in town. 

The cool and fresh sea breeze will guarantee a rejuvenating night’s rest.

DAY 8
excursions

After breakfast we will depart for a day of various activities and sight seeing in and around Swakopmund.  Swakopmund is a colorful blend of the old, solid, colonial past and the new vibrant Namibia.  It is a true tourist friendly town with the accent on relaxation and enjoyment with a full range of things to do and places to see.

Possible activities include:

Tandem skydive, scenic airplane flights, sand boarding, boat cruises, and visits to the moon landscapes, lichen fields, dunes, welwitschia mirabilis & aquarium.


DAY 9
304km

After breakfast at Villa Wiese we will set off along the coast to Hentiesbay.  As you continue along the coast you will notice bright splashes of colour on the grey sands.  These are lichen fields, consisting of colonies of these primitive plants which obtain all of their moisture from the sea fog and which is a very threatened species.  From Hentiesbay we will proceed to the Spitzkoppe across the open desert.  

The Spitzkoppe is one of the most famous landmarks in Namibia and the view of this impressive mountain is superb with plenty of tempting photographic opportunities.   

From here it is only a short distance before you reach Ameib Ranch in the Erongo Mountains. 

You will camp in the Erongo Mountains and dinner will be served while you relax around the camp fire.

DAY 10
320km

Our last day of riding will cover the stretch from Ameib Ranch to Windhoek. 

From Windhoek we will proceed to a lodge near the Hosea Kutako International Airport for the last night of the safari.

Our comfortable 4x4 vehicles will transport you to Windhoek for dinner at the famous Joe’s Beerhouse where generous portions of excellent Namibia and German food can be enjoyed in the cozy atmosphere of this unique pub and restaurant with its very original witty décor.

 

DAY 11

Our 4x4 vehicles will take you on a day visit to various historical places and places of interest in Windhoek after breakfast at the lodge.  A light meal will be served during the day.  Later during the day you we will drive you to Hosea Kutako International Airport for your return flight.
